About me

Why have so many Russians fallen for war? I am a historian and analyst of Russian culture and war propaganda with two books (and a third coming!) trying to explain Russians’ obsession with war.

I am currently Assistant Professor at the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw, Poland and a graduate faculty member in War Studies at the Royal Military College, Canada. In the past, I have taught at the University of Toronto, Queen’s University (Ontario), and the Canadian Forces College. In 2024, I was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in London in recognition of my contributions to historical scholarship.

Email me with media requests about propaganda, social media, and Russian views on the Ukraine-Russia conflict. I’ve written/been interviewed for the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, New York Times, National Post, New Statesman, Guardian, Globe & Mail, BBC, CBC, CTV, ABC, YLE, Radio Canada, Mashable, Dainik Bhaskar, VICE News, Times Radio, and many more.

My second book, Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia’s Fascist Youth, was released in summer 2023. The book has been translated into five languages and excerpted in publications including The Daily Mail, The Times of London, and Foreign Policy.

I studied in the UK and Russia before completing my PhD at the University of Toronto.
